Zooey Deschanel, Mindy Kaling, Amy Poehler & Allison Williams Cover ELLE’s Women in TV Is

ELLE magazine’s annual Women in TV Issue is back this February, featuring funny ladies Zooey Deschanel, Mindy Kaling, Amy Poehler and Allison WIlliams.

“Their collective confidence, wit and ability to stay grounded in the face of such tremendous success make them exactly the kind of women we love to feature in ELLE,” says Robbie Myers, ELLE’s Editor-in-Chief.

Of these four covers, what immediately stands out to me is that Mindy Kaling’s portrait is the only one cropped to a head shot and the only cover in black and white. Of these four women being honored by ELLE, she is the heaviest set and the only woman of color.

Her cover, however, is beautiful and probably the strongest.  She looks the most powerful.

That aside, we love that ELLE makes a point to feature women of power and success.  As noted above, the other three covers are full body portraits and we just love Allison Williams’ midnight blue dress!

Zooey Deschanel is wearing a girly pink accented dress.  Girliness, in the industry, used to almost always equate weakness but Deschanel thinks things are changing:

“There has been a shift.  I really have stood up for myself on multiple platforms.  It’s sort of the grown-up version of middle-school nastiness, and I’m just like, come on.” Deschanel adds, “If there’s one thing I’d like to graduate from, it’s girl-on-girl hate.  I don’t believe in it.”

Amy Poehler is wearing a provocative, all black, tight suit with satin lapels.

Of the covers, she’s the only woman smiling and her hair is down in messy, almost wild, blonde waves.  She looks fierce and unapologetic, a nod to her attitude towards the industry.

“I like to do things that challenge me and make me nervous.  You learn early as an actor that creating your own material is the only way to have any control,” Poehler says, “Hollywood is like a bad boyfriend.  You can’t stand around and wait to be asked to dance.”
