Who is the New DKNY Woman? #NYFW
In a recent interview with WWD, new DKNY Creative Directors, Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne of Public School, said they had an issue with the word girl saying “We always refer to her as a woman.” After reading this, the first question that popped into my mind is just what is their idea of the new DKNY woman?
As the SS16 DKNY show approached, I was somewhat equal parts nervous and excited, DKNY is my favorite brand and Donna Karan is my spirit animal. Now with Donna gone and the boys from Public School at the helm, a new era is being ushered in. But was it an era that would bring loyal DKNY fans (and customers) like myself with it or would we be alienated and left to covet pieces from past collections that hang proudly in our closets?
Sadly, it looks like it was the latter. The first of many changes came with a different venue, which meant I was actually barred from attending the event and was reduced to watching the show via live stream. Secondly, I did not mentally favorite a single piece in the collection. During past runway shows, I’ve always found a few pieces that I would mentally catalogue for future purchase, ones that I know would work with my body type and style. Sadly, unless you count oversize coats, there was nothing in this collection that I could 1. see myself wearing and 2. would work for my body.
Now, I’m not going to go as far as to say that collection was horrible, because it wasn’t. Was it as strong as past collections? No (and even Cathy Horyn seems to agree). However that is to be expected with new designers at the helm, and while I could see some of the DKNY DNA still embedded into the collection, it was not vibrant, with only a few pops of blue to add some color to an otherwise very monotone collection.
So, instead of showing you images from a collection that didn’t wow me, I am instead showing you images of the outfit I had purchased to originally wear to the DKNY SS16 show that I sadly did not get to really wear. The look includes a pleated skirt and leather/suede handbag from the DKNY fall collection, along with a mesh shirt and sandals from the past spring 2015 collection.

So to answer the question of who is the new DKNY woman? It looks like, at least for this round, it is not me. (PS – if you want to see the look, go here)
