Time to Nerd out and Get Your Baking on With These Geeky Recipes
Ever wonder how to make Butterbeer from Harry Potter, Lemon Cakes from A Song of Ice and Fire, or Star Trek’s Romulan Ale? Well look no further than “The Geeky Chef Cookbook” by Cassandra Reeder.
Tammy and I decided to put two of these recipes to the test, the Romulan Ale and Lemon Cakes, both of which can be made in an afternoon (plus we already had like 90% of the ingredients).
Let’s start with the Lemon Cakes.
This recipe was inspired by “A Song of Ice and Fire” aka Game of Thrones and takes roughly 45-mins to make. The recipe was easy enough to follow but here are a few tips that will make baking these tasty treats easier.
The recipe calls for 2 lemons but you really need 3-4, especially if you are using fresh lemon juice (I cheated and used the bottled stuff).
Add the sliced lemons to sugar/water mixture at the beginning. Since I’ve never candied anything before I wasn’t aware of this.
Save the candied lemon mixture and use this to soak the cakes after they come out of the oven. It will save time and waste not/want not.
If you want to make the cakes more lemony, add more lemon juice to the batter. I did this by mistake (hey baking is not my first calling). We had to bake them for an additional 10-mins, but man were they good.
The Romulan Ale is super easy to make.
All you need is 2 tablespoons each of Rum, Creme de Cacao, and Blue Curacao and blue cream soda. Now we could not find blue cream soda to save our lives so we got reg vanilla and added blue food coloring. The taste kinda like cream soda with a hint of cacao and rum. We thought it was only appropriate to serve the Romulan Ale in a Romulan themed glass because we are nerds.
