Taking Care of My Platinum Blonde Locks
Hello!! So by now you should know that a little over month ago I went all out and look my strawberry(ish) blonde locks to platinum level. Why? I was bored and it had been way too long since I had done anything crazy to my hair. Growing up, my mom didn’t care what we did to our hair since, as she put it, “nothing is ever permanent with hair, it will grow back”. I took that to heart and since then I have had no reservations about changing up my hair whether it was going black and pink, chopping off 7″, or now going platinum. If you want to read about the whole process, head on over to MODE where I wrote about the experience.
One thing everyone who is thinking about going platinum, there is a A LOT of care and maintenance that goes into this look. Thankfully my hair was strong before starting the process so I didn’t have to worry about broken ends. I did however, have to worry about dry ends and “spaghetti” hair, you know that feeling when your hair feels like wet spaghetti in the shower. I also have to take great care into making sure I keep the brassiness and yellow out of my hair. All of this means the days of just using whatever shampoo/conditioner I wanted are gone, I know have a full on 2-3x hair care routine.
So what do I use and when? Well I’m about to break it down for you!
Start with Hair Food Root Cleansing Shampoo to remove any product and oil build up.
Wash with Alterna’s Caviar Anti-Aging Brightening Blonde Shampoo (two washes)
Apply Dessange Paris California Blonde Brass Color Correcting Crème all over hair, comb through, leave on for 5-minutes. This cc cream is amazing, and takes out any brassiness or yellow hues.
Condition with Alterna’s Caviar Anti-Aging Brightening Blonde Conditioner
Before bed I massage in Macadamia Oil Moisturizing Mask and leave in overnight.
Wash hair with DryBar’s Blonde Ale Brightening Shampoo (two washes)
Apply Dessange Paris California Blonde Brass Color Correcting Crème all over hair, comb through, leave on for 10-minutes.
Apply Alterna’s The Science of TEN Perfect Blend Masque all over hair, focusing on the ends, comb through, leave on for 10-minutes. This masque is my new BFF. I started using this two days after I went platinum and after using it 2x a week for the first week after my hair was already feeling less damaged and was easier to style and blow dry.
Condition with Drybar’s Blonde Ale Brightening Conditioner
FRIDAY (Every other week)
Wash hair with John Frieda Beach Blonde Cool Dip Shampoo (one wash)
Towel dry hair, apply Cantu Shea Butter Leave-In Conditioning Cream all over hair, focusing on the ends, comb through. I leave this in overnight and just rise out in the morning and left my hair air dry.
For daily styling I use the following products:
DryBar Hot Toddy Heat Protector. I use this no matter what before every blow dry.
DryBar Blonde Ale Brightening Cremé. This adds shine and smoothness to my hair.
If my hair is feeling a little too dry, I’ll apply Alterna’s Caviar Anti-Aging Overnight Hair Rescue to the ends. Only do this nights before a hair wash day as this will need to be washed out in the morning.
