Summer Smooth | Waxing 411

Ladies (and gents) summer season is closely approaching. This means it’s time to hit the pool, beach, backyard BBQ in shorts, skirts and swimsuits. This is normally the time of year when we all freak out because let’s be honest shaving, waxing, etc during the cold winter months is just not a priority (at least in my world). So I am introducing the Summer Smooth series talking about just that shaving, body waxing, and other forms of hair removal. Now if you want to let your hair grow free and wild more power to you, but for those of us that like to be hair free this is for you. The misconception is that only females will go for a wax. This isn’t true, many males will go too. In fact, male waxing San Diego has been on a constant rise in the recent years as it’s becoming more and more common for males to get waxed.

To kick things off, I spoke with Melanie Gilliland, European Wax Center’s Chief Wax Expert and Educator to get the 411 on waxing that really all us girls and guys should know.

Misti Michelle: How long should hair be before waxing?

Melanie Gilliland: Hair should be about the length of a grain of rice when going for a wax.

MM: What causes ingrown hairs and how do I minimize these?

MG: Ingrown hairs occur when hair grows back into the skin not to the surface. EWC’s Smooth Me Ingrown Hair Wipes banish bumps and ingrown hairs quick and easy. Infused with alpha and beta hydroxy acids and EWC’s exclusive Comfort Blend, the single-use wipes clear and prevent unsightly bumps, while visibly helping slow the regrowth of hair between waxes. Also, regular exfoliation is very helpful when targeting ingrown hairs.

MM: How long should a wax last in between sessions?

MG: Guests should come in every three to four weeks for best results. I encourage everyone to make their next reservation before they leave so that it is in the calendar. Even if you have to move the reservation, you will most likely make it in that week, not allowing the hair to get too long.

MM: I don’t shave/wax during the winter, is that a big no-no?

MG: Waxing year round will leave you with the best results. Use the winter months to prepare your skin for summer!

MM: In your experience, what are the most common misconceptions about waxing?

MG: There are a few…

  1. That it always hurts as bad as the first one. The truth is, if you continue to wax on a schedule without shaving your waxes become easier and easier over time. It will soon become a pampering service that you actually look forward to.

  2. That waxing requires a long growing in period where you have to hide your hair. The truth is your hair grows in finer and thinner over time making it hard to see of even feel. Even if your hair grows in visibly, the grow-in period is only about one week (as you will enjoy two to three week of smoothness). A service like underarms or face can be even shorter than a week.

  3. That it is damaging to the skin or can accelerate aging. The truth is waxing is great for your skin when using the quality of wax we use. This is apparent by simply feeling the legs of someone who has waxed regularly for some time. The skin is much softer than that of a shaver. Our wax provides a mechanical exfoliation removing unwanted dead skin that is aging you. The exfoliation is effective and even. People have asked me if waxing causes the skin to sag because it is pulled during the removal of the wax. This has no truth to it, as the skin is held taught during the removal of strips (guests would bruise if we just pulled at their skin). Even if the skin was pulled, that does not create sagging. Aging comes from other things like blood flow, lack of moisture, excess dead skin, etc.
