Olympics 2016 | Men’s USA Gymnastic Team

The Rio 2016 Olympic Games are just a few weeks away and this past week kicked off the Olympic trials for Team USA. Over the weekend the Men’s USA Gymnastics Team held their trials and after 2-days of hard work, sweat and tears the selection committee selected the five men that will represent USA at the games.
Out of the five men three are repeating Olympic champions. Sam Mikulak, Jake Dalton, John Orozco all were part of Team USA at the London 2012 Games and will once again head to the summer games to try to win gold for Team USA (however we will be equally happy with ANY medal in men’s gymnastics). Joining them will be Alex Naddour and Chris Brooks, both of whom were selected as alternates for the 2012 games.
Naturally I watched both days of competition and while it was clear that Mikulak, Dalton, and Brooks were (to me at least) locks for the team, I am surprised at Orozco was chosen. He had to take a full year off due to a pretty nasty achilles injury. He also wasn’t consistent on many of the apparatuses during the trials. Orozco was however amazing on the parallel bars which might have been why he was selected. Naddour was really one of the only athletes of the trials to beat the pommel horse, which is where many of the men have failed in past games.
The women’s team will have their trials in two weeks on July 8th & 10th in San Jose where Simone Biles and 2012 Fierce Five member Aly Raisman are pretty much a lock for the team.
The 2016 Summer Olympic Games from Rio will kick off with the opening ceremony on August 5 on NBC.
