OLYMPICS 2016 | Meet the New Fierce Five

2016 Women's Gymnastic Olympic Team

The Rio 2016 Olympic Games are just a few weeks away and tonight wrapped up two days of the of Olympic trials for the women’s Team USA gymnastic team.

Just like the men’s team, only five ladies were selected to represent USA in Rio. Simone Biles, who placed 1st, is the only one who is guaranteed a ticket to the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. Joining her will be 16-year old and first year senior level Laurie Hernandez and Madison Kocian. Making their return to the Olympic Games will be reigning All-Around Gold Medalist Gabby Douglas and reigning Team All-Around and Floor Exercise Gold Medalist Aly Raisman.

Naturally I watched both days of competition and while it was clear that Biles and Raisman were (to me at least) locks for the team, Douglas was one of the girls with a question mark in my mind. She was solid both night on the uneven bars and floor, she fell on the beam both nights. Kocian is also rock solid on the bars but is also a decent fill-in on the beam and floor if need me. Newcomer Hernandez is the one that shocked us all by delivering solid routines on all four elements to come in 2nd after Biles.

The 2016 Summer Olympic Games from Rio will kick off with the opening ceremony on August 5 on NBC.
