Meet the 2014 US Olympic Women’s Figure Skating Team

Last night the women of figure skating battled on the ice not just for the U.S. Figure Skating National Championship title but also for one of the three spots on this US Olympic Figure Skating Team that will head to Sochi, Russia next month.

All eyes were on both Gracie Gold and defending Champion Ashley Wagner as to who would win.  Wanger – who narrowly missed making the 2010 US Olympic Team – skated hard but fell twice earning her a final score of 182.74.  Newcomer 15 year old Polina Edmunds shocked everyone with her fun, vivacious short program and her long program was enough to land her in the lead with 193.63 while wild card Mirai Nagasu managed to skate a clean program and land a final score of 190.74.

Gracie Gold, who skated last, managed to take the lead she set for herself during the short program (where she debuted a brand new routine) and run with it for her free skate (long program).  Even with a small fall, Gracie managed to set a 18 point lead with a final score of 211.69 to take first, bumping Edmunds down to second, Nagasu down to third, and Wagner down to fourth.

Today, the US Figure Skating committee as announced its picks for who will be heading to Sochi next month.  Making the cut for Team USA are Gracie Gold, Polina Edmunds, and Ashley Wagner.

Stay tuned for announcements on Men’s, Pairs, and Ice Dancing selections.
