Julie and the Phantoms

If anything 2020 has been the YEAR for TV content. Not only have movie studios chosen to just skip traditional theater releases in favor of streaming platforms but said platforms have been pumping out new content to keep us socially distanced folks entertained.

One of Netflix's newest releases is Julie and the Phantoms, a musical series based on Brazilian television series Julie e os Fantasmas. The series is brought to us by the one and only Kenny Ortega, you know the director responsible for Newsies, Hocus Pocus, The Descendants franchise, and of course the High School Musical franchise.

The story revolves around Julie, a singer/songwriter who, due to the death of her mother, has struggled to sing again. She finds not only inspiration but a newfound joy in performing when she summons the ghosts of the '90s rock band Sunset Curve, the members of which died right before their big breakout performance.

Overall, the show is a cute, quick, and easy binge with catchy songs that kinda lets your mind relax a little. What is funny is that even though this is a Netflix original, one would be forgiven for thinking it originally aired on the Disney Channel as it has all the Disney vibes.

As far as the songs are concerned, there are 15 original songs featured across the 9 episodes. I'm not going to rank them all but I will list out my top picks.

1. Edge of Great

2. Bright

3. Wake Up

4. Now or Never

5. Stand Tall

I will admit, I'm looking forward to a season 2 along with whatever else the multi-deal contract Kenny Ortega inked with Netflix brings us.
